Sashlock

a lock that uses a key and needs handles

Deadlock

a lock that only uses a key and not handles

Bathroom lock

a lock that uses a turn button on the inside and has a coin slot on the outside in case of emergencies to throw the bolt instead of a key, very useful if you have small children

Tubelatch

a latch that only has the sprung bolt and does not have a key and only needs one hole drilled to fit the body

Mortice Lock or latch

a lock or latch that is fitted into the edge of the door

Rimlock

a lock that is fitted to the face of the door like a Yale type lock or the old big square back door type lock

Butts

No - not something you sit on, it is in fact the traditional term for hinges

Swan necked

this is a term for a bolt with a cranked end for outward opening doors

CP,SC,FB,PB

these are terms for the products finish – chrome plate, satin chrome, florentine brass, polished brass

Levers

these are the locking parts of a lock, the more levers the more secure

Euro

not the means of payment, but the term for a lock with a large keyhole shape cylinder often found on uPVC doors

Window lock

this is a key operated device required by most insurance companies

BS3621 – 2004

this is the kite mark given to five lever mortice locks required by most insurance companies

Security bolts

these are key operated bolts required by most insurance companies

Escutcheon

this is the correct name for a keyhole plate
